Setting Up A Multiplayer Game In GTA

DOS Version:

When you run the DOS version a 'front end' will open up before the actual game starts.  This 'front end' lets you set up various aspects of the game, such as network (multiplayer) settings, sound configuration, controller setup, etc.  In this 'front end' simply choose the  Configure Network option.  You are then asked to choose the network type (No Network, Serial Link, IPX, Modem).  You then choose the appropriate network type.

    No Network: No Network Settings

Serial Link: Run a multi-player game by connecting 2 computers with a null modem cable via your computer's serial port.  Requires you to choose your serial port com number and you will need a null modem cable.

IPX: Run a local area network game via the IPX protocol.  Requires you to load DOS network drivers and choose your network socket number and of course it would help greatly to actually have a network to run it on ;).

Modem: Run a multi-player game by connecting 2 computers via modems.  Requires you enter what COM your modem is on, the phone number you want to call, and allows you change your modem strings.

After setting up what kind of game you want to play you then accept your changes and choose the Run GTA option.  After choosing what version of GTA you want to run the game will then start and then you choose
Gather Network to start a network game over serial link or IPX, or to
dial the number of the other player if you set it up to play a modem game.

    or

Join Network to join a network game over serial link or IPX, or to wait
for a call if you set it up to play a modem game.

Windows Version:

All Windows GTA network games run under DirectX's Direct Play so you will therefore need to install DirectX.  You then choose Gather Network to wait for others to connect to you or Join Network to connect to a game.  You then choose what type of game you want to play and follow the ingame instructions.

IPX: Run a local area network game via the IPX protocol.  Requires you to load DOS network drivers and choose your network socket number and of course it would help greatly to actually have a network to run it on ;).

TCP/IP: Runs a game over the internet.  If wish to join a game you will have to know the ip of the person you wish to connect to.

Modem: Run a multi-player game by connecting 2 computers via modems.  This will use whatever modem you have set up in windows to either wait for calls or to call someone else depending on if you choose Gather or Join.

Serial Link: Run a multi-player game by connecting 2 computers with a null modem cable via your computer's serial port.  Requires you to know your serial port com number and you will or course need a null modem cable.
